15 Fun Things to Do in Fort Davis, Texas
Share
With a population of less than 1,000 people, Fort Davis might not spring to mind when picturing a day trip destination — but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Other than visiting our store (a must!) here are some activities you should do at least once when visiting the highest town in Texas.
1. Ride Horses at Prude Ranch
Let your inner cowboy or cowgirl out! Whether you’re just passing through or have lived in Fort Davis for years, Prude Ranch is always a blast. They offer year-round trail rides through some of the most scenic country in the state.
2. Hike Madera Canyon
Surprisingly, even some locals don’t know about Madera Canyon. Always free to the public, this gorgeous 2.4-mile loop trail is located just a few miles past the McDonald Observatory. The hike takes you through a sky island woodland with a cliff overlook and offers a glimpse of Mount Livermore. Leashed dogs are welcome.
3. Recharge at Double Shot Coffee Lounge
Need a boost? The Hotel Limpia’s downtown coffee shop can’t be missed. They serve breakfast classics like biscuits and gravy alongside espresso, tea, and iced drinks. The lounge is also a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of Fort Davis.
4. Drive the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop
This 75-mile stretch of highway is arguably the most beautiful drive in Texas. Taking you through juniper, oak, and pinyon pine savannahs, the view opens up to reveal the dramatic Sawtooth Range in the distance. The Scenic Loop is even more stunning when it snows — the mountains are usually dusted white long after the surrounding landscape has thawed.
5. Eat Ice Cream at Jon’s Caboose
If you like restaurants in unusual spots, this one’s for you. Formerly Hebert’s Caboose, the aptly named Jon’s Caboose dishes out soft-serve, snow cones, milkshakes, and frozen yogurt from a bright green train car. Eating Blue Bell ice cream on a hot day is practically a Texan right of passage. Top your dessert with pecans from Davis Mountains Nut Company for an extra crunch.
6. Visit the Cacti at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute
CDRI’s greenhouse boasts one of the world’s largest collections of Chihuahuan Desert cacti. There are also numerous trails and exhibits to enjoy on the property, including a pollinator garden, native grasses exhibit, and bird blind. Stop by the visitor center for even more info about West Texas flora and fauna.
7. Get Salvadoran Food at Antojitos Del Comal Salvadorenos
Often just referred to as the yellow food truck, Antojitos Del Comal Salvadorenos serves up some seriously good eats. It’s conveniently located in the heart of Fort Davis next to Lowes. If you’ve never tried Salvadoran food, the pupusas — warm, thick tortillas stuffed with meat or other tasty fillings — are to die for. Chat with the friendly owners and enjoy some homemade goodness.
8. Hike With a Homeless Dog at Davis Mountains State Park
Every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Davis Mountains State Park lets you hike with a shelter dog from Grand Companions. Hike With a Homeless Dog is a fun event for the pups and humans, alike, something akin to therapy. We could all use more walks in the woods. And, who knows? You might just meet your next best friend.
9. Test Your Nerve at Rattlers and Reptiles
The Lone Star State is infamous for its rattlesnakes. If you’ve never seen one, can you even call yourself a Texan? Fortunately, you can (safely) be surrounded by live rattlesnakes right here in Fort Davis. The Rattlers and Reptiles Museum is as fascinating as it is unsettling, letting you learn about these gorgeous creatures without putting yourself in harm’s way.
10. Go to a Wine Tasting at Château Wright
If a room full of pit vipers isn’t really your speed, no one can blame you. Why not unwind with a glass of rosé instead? The Château Wright winery grows their own grapes in the cool, high-elevation air of Fort Davis, lending their wine a unique flavor profile. They also have a great selection of food that pairs well with any of their drinks.
11. Travel Back in Time at Fort Davis National Historic Site
This U.S. Army fort was established in 1854 to protect mail coaches, freight wagons, and emigrants on the San Antonio-El Paso Road. It also helped control activities during the Comanche and Mescalero War trails. Today, you can tour the fort to learn about its rich history and gain a better understanding of its importance in Texas history.
12. Crack Open a Book at the Jeff Davis County Library
Sometimes, unwinding with a book is the best way to spend the day. Fort Davis’ charming library has good reads, comfortable seating, and free wifi, making it a great place to hang out on a rainy day or when you’re tired from hiking.
13. Go to a Barn Dance at the Kelly Pavilion
Yeehaw! Come prepared to let loose and have a great time. Often occurring as part of an all-day event that includes cowboy coffee, a trail ride, and goat roping, Fort Davis really knows how to party — country style. Make new friends and lifelong memories at a barn dance in the Kelly Pavilion.
14. Feast at Rock N Raul’s Smokehouse
Y’all, this barbecue place does not disappoint. With a menu including fall-off-the-bone ribs, baked beans, fresh coleslaw, and elote, you’re guaranteed to walk in hangry and leave satisfied. They offer really generous portions at reasonable prices that are worth it every time.
15. Attend a Star Party at McDonald Observatory
There’s a good reason the song “Deep in the Heart of Texas” mentions big, bright stars. Free for locals, going to a star party is one of the best things to do in Fort Davis. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable and use a laser to point out constellations and the Milky Way in the jet-black sky. After the talk, look through the telescopes to see more stars and planets than you’ve ever seen in your life.
